^ I remember learning by rote from cover to cover, my entire Class X Hindi text for my Class X board exams, after my Hindi teacher failed me in the "hope" examinations (some term for the pre-board exams!) by 4 marks, despite my pleading her to give me those 4 marks so I could escape the crap I received back home. ...
So in the final (board) exam, I put down everything from the text verbatim, no matter what the heck was asked in the question, and trust me, they got more than they wanted for each question; because I only knew the general area from where it came in the text. So I would include a paragraph above it and a paragraph below it as well.. just as a backup. I was pleasantly shocked when I ended up scoring 91/100.. more than many of my classmates whose mother tongue was Hindi.
In hindsight though, she probably stuck to her ground, failing me to ensure I worked doubly hard to pass the board exams. I still remember what she wrote on my failed "hope" exam answer script in red... "XXXX beta, gabarana muth". Sadly, she passed away from breast cancer about 5 years after that. RIP.
