Sounds good and all... but aren't cricinfo violating copyrights of some kind? I mean, shouldn't they contact the company that owned coverage rights for that Test series or tour rather than a random individual youtube poster? Methinks cricinfo is treading on very slippery ground here. They're liable to be sued one day if they continue putting out articles like this.

And btw, how come they didn't credit you for the video?

^ I'm sure they could successfully fight any attempted litigation fairly easily. If they were based in any country with a reasonably developed common or civil law system they'd almost certainly be legally ok in this situation because:

Fair use is a limitation and exception to the exclusive right granted by copyright law to the author of a creative work. In United States copyright law, fair use is a doctrine that permits limited use of copyrighted material without acquiring permission from the rights holders. Examples of fair use include commentary, criticism, news reporting, research, teaching, library archiving and scholarship. It provides for the legal, unlicensed citation or incorporation of copyrighted material in another author's work under a four-factor balancing test.

The term fair use originated in the United States. A similar principle, fair dealing, exists in some other common law jurisdictions. Civil law jurisdictions have other limitations and exceptions to copyright.

Agreed.. but it's a rather thin line between fair or unfair. I doubt fair use can be applied here because they are also looking at it as a means of increasing their viewership/audience, i.e., with a business objective. Furthermore, by putting up Rob's links, they are jeopardizing him as well.

^ They're doing commentary. They're not charging money for viewing it and they're not claiming it as their own. They're on pretty solid ground legally, IMO.

I'm sure they have lawyers who consider this stuff too BTW.

At worst they might get a takedown notice. (Then they'd consult their lawyers and if their lawyers thought it was prudent, they'd take it down).

Me, watching it on Cricinfo counts as a view for Rob, watching it on youtube links you to Rob's stuff.

Heck, even I've had a video embedded on the guardian. I only realised when everyone was commenting on it and I looked at the statistics (it tells you were the views came from)

And the fact that I made a video when I was 12 and it was embedded on the guardian shows that this whole thread is just Rob with his head up his arse

^ Sure, if posting a few vintage vids makes him so, then so be it.

Pay them no heed, Rob. They're just jealous of your paedophile-moustache. It's very impressive.
